Young Members Group

YM outing

Are YOU a “twenty- or thirty-something” and a current or prospective member of the Mid-Hudson Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club?

Would you like to meet other members of the same age-group who share YOUR interests?

Care to participate in activities geared to, attended by, and led by members in their twenties and thirties?

Then the Mid-Hudson Chapter’s Young Members Group is for YOU!!!

Building upon the successful efforts of other ADK Chapters, YOUR Chapter is launching a N-E-W initiative for the “younger crowd” involving monthly activities and social gatherings, including local day trips (hiking, paddling, biking, etc), some weekend trips, and some non-traditional fun stuff like ice skating, “meet and greet” parties and indoor rock climbing.

Attend one of our upcoming events, and be prepared to have fun, meet new people, and share ideas for future activities and events.

Get in on the “ground floor” by joining us by dropping a email at MH.ADK.YMG@gmail.com .

Summary of upcoming Young Members Group Events:

Though geared to those in their 20s and 30s Young Members Group events are open to all.

Looking back at our first year

Now into its second year, we look back at just a few YMG events that contributed to its success:

Fahnestock night hike:

Ever think that hiking out after dark means that someone underestimated the distance? Think again.

We laughed and talked non-stop during the car ride to the trailhead. The convivial mood didn't cease as darkness enveloped the sky and we ventured into the dimly lit forest of Fahnestock for our night hike. We felt in complete tune with nature; a few didn't use headlamps and relied only on their keen senses of hearing and touch to guide them through the woods.

Bash Bish Falls - in the fall:

We all arrived safely only to quickly ascend: up, up and up. But as always...it was worth it...because this hike has GREAT VIEWS! It was a day of ascending, descending, scrambling and bushwhacking, leaving room little room for lessons on "How to whistle with an acorn". Yes, we all made it out safely....and ended with a "pick-up" joy ride dedicated to those who know exactly where and when to step!

Winter rock climbing:

Just because the snow flies and the temps drop does not mean a end to hiking, but as most members lacked winter gear, we opted for the indoor activity of rock climbing. We had 3 (really 4, due to a snow-day) rock climbing sessions after work during the 05-06 winter season.

Young Members Group Charter:

“Young Members Group” or "YMG" events and activities would be open to all members of the Chapter. However, the Group will be geared to those members age 18-45.

Outdoor activities will be the primary focus of the Group’s endeavors. Besides hiking and biking, YMG events may also include other activities such as ice skating, rafting, skiing, picnicking, concerts and rock climbing.

YMG events are official ADK sanctioned events and will follow guidelines set forth by the chapter to make sure that events fall under the chapters insurance requirements.

YMG will develop a email based system for communication between members, such a system will address privacy concerns brought up by YMG members and open to all MH-ADK members who wish to receive such notices. A phone chain system may also be used for YM's who don't have/won't use email.

It is preferable, especially at the start that YMG events don't conflict with other YMG events.

YMG hikes will be led by younger members. YMG official ADK positions will be held by young members.

We will use a multi-pronged approach to reach potential younger members: notification of current MH-ADK younger members, YMG web site with a link on the MH-ADK home page, word of mouth of current ADK members to interest parties will be encouraged, colleges and other club groups that work closely with ADK will be notified of the YMG, Flyers will be posted in locations that would target potential new members, a YMG insert into the current ADK flyer.

The YMG membership will maintain a voting committee chairperson on the chapter board. The chairperson must qualify as a young member at the time of assuming the chair, and serve a term of two years. The YMG will hold a meeting to determine the YMG chairperson nominee, which must also be approved by the board. The meeting can be a standard meeting, or a virtual meeting, but must take place no later then 1 month before the new term is to begin. Responsibility for this meeting falls on the current YMG chairperson.

The YMG will seek to further the ADK mission statement of recreation, education and conservation.
