day CCC). These men and women were doing significant rockwork on the beautiful Rubicon trail in D L Bliss St Park on the west shore of Lake Tahoe. These backcountry workers used two gasoline-powered tools, a rockdrill and a track-laying rock mover, as well as a wide variety of hand tools. Rockwork is important in building and maintaining footpaths in our region as well. Rock is the preferred material to bridge streams or wet areas. Rock stairs prevent and repair erosion on sections of steep trail. Working with rock is not easy. But done properly, rockwork provides a safe treadway that will last indefinitely.
